Home - Dierks Bentley (Music Video)

Dierks Bentley - Home on MUZU.TV
“I once heard George Jones say in an interview that country music was like religion to him. I couldn’t agree more. It’s where I turn when times are tough and I need answers and it’s where I go when I want to cut loose and have fun. As a singer and songwriter, it’s not only how I make a living but what gives me direction and purpose in life.” “I don’t have a storybook tale to tell, as many entertainers do, about growing up in a musical family. I wasn’t singing harmonies in the church by age five and I wasn’t fronting the family band by age ten. Everything I learned musically, I had to learn on my own. My country music education has consisted of listening to a lot records and spending a lot of time listening and playing in Nashville bars and clubs.”Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, Dierks moved to Nashville when he was nineteen and immediately immersed himself in the Nashville music scene. “Most people that don’t live in Nashville probably associate the music scene here with what they hear on their radio, but there is so much more going on. There’s a lot of great live music that doesn’t get a whole lot of recognition outside of the city.” One place that is particularly special to Dierks is the Station Inn, a club that is in many ways a “mecca” for bluegrass fans worldwide. “I stumbled into the Station Inn one night right at the time that I was becoming pretty discouraged with the music business. I discovered a whole community of musicians and singers that played music for all the right reasons. They didn’t play because they wanted to be stars or be in music videos, they played because they loved the music. Being there made such an impression on me that I spent just about every Tuesday night there absorbing all I could take in.”Eventually, the Nashville training ground took Dierks to a bar called Springwater, one of Nashville’s older and “cosmetically-challenged” music venues. “I remember playing there one rainy night and water was pouring on to the stage from cracks in the ceiling. We were all trying to find a place on the stage that was dry…I thought for sure I was going to be electrocuted! By the end of the night, me and my guitar were soaked. But it was my first place to have a regular gig and I didn’t care. I was just happy to be playing music in Music City.” Next on the list was Market Street Brewery, a bar/restaurant located in downtown Nashville. Dierks went from playing for free draft beer to finally having a paying gig. “It took me two hours to load in, set up, and tear down this PA system that I had put together. After paying for parking, the bar tab, and the rest of the guys in the band, there usually wasn’t anything left for me.One night Dierks was playing at Market Street when Vince Gill and Amy Grant walked through the door. Vince had his mandolin with him and he sat down at the bar about five feet away from the stage. Dierks asked Vince if he would come up and sing a few songs and without hesitation, Vince nodded yes. “I thought he would sing a song or two and sit back down but he ended up picking with us for almost an hour and half. ‘Truly unbelievable’ is the only way I can describe it. I thought that if my music dreams never went any further, that would be alright because I got to share the stage (albeit a very small one!) with Vince Gill.”At the same time that Dierks was playing bars on Lower Broadway, he was spending his days the same way Alan Jackson did when he first moved to town, working for TNN (The Nashville Network). “I was really lucky to have that job. I started off working in the tape library researching old music footage for a country music documentary. I couldn’t believe I was being paid to do it.” He later worked in the royalty department, sending checks to songwriters whose songs were used on the television network. After an independent record Dierks made reached the ears of music row, he finally achieved one of his biggest goals: attaining a publishing deal. “Every morning I wake up so thankful that I’m able to be a full time songwriter, and especially that I get to write for Sony/Tree Publishing, with all its history of great writers like Hank Cochran, Harlan Howard, and Bill Anderson.” After years of working outside of music row, Dierks suddenly found himself surrounded by a team of people that believed in him and what he wanted to do musically. One of those people was song-plugger Arthur Buenahora, who teamed Dierks up with another Tree writer, Brett Beavers. “I knew right away that Brett and I were going to get along. The fact that he’s a musician, and has been out on the road with various acts for the last twelve years, means a lot to me because they are the people I respect most in this town. He loves traditional country music and as a writer, he understands the importance of keepin’ it country and keepin’ it real, but also of trying to take the music somewhere new.”It wasn’t long after they began collaborating that a few of their demos were heard by a couple of record labels, both expressing serious interest. After putting on a successful showcase for the two labels, what Dierks thought would be a tough decision turned out to be an easy one. “I met with Mike Dungan and everyone at Capitol Records and knew immediately that that was where I wanted to be. It really is about music over there.” If there had been any doubts, they would have been completely erased one night when Dierks was driving by the record label late one night and saw that Mike’s lights were on in his office. Thinking Mike was burning the midnight oil, Dierks called him on the cell phone number Mike had given him. “Mike, it’s Dierks…what’s going on?” Mike replied, “I’m in Los Angeles in a limousine sitting next to James Taylor. We’re on our way to see a Paul McCartney show…what’s up?” Dierks remembers sputtering into the phone, “Dude, then what are you doing talking to me…you’re hanging out with James Taylor! I can’t believe you even took my call.” Mike laughed before answered. “Talking to you is just as important.” At that very moment, Dierks knew he’d found a home at Capitol Records. The result of this professional collaboration is a record that is creatively “fresh” sounding and pure country. Capitol allowed Brett to work as a first time producer and gave the two the freedom they needed to make the record they wanted to make. Produced with an emphasis on acoustic sounds and dynamics, each song is given space and room to build. The album consists of thirteen songs, eleven of which Dierks wrote or co-wrote. “In today’s politically correct world, it often isn’t appropriate to talk about drinking, but I wanted to make a record you can drink a couple of beers to,” Dierks jokes. ‘What Was I Thinkin’, ‘How Am I Doin’, ‘Forget About You,’ and obviously, ‘Bartenders, etc’…are all up-tempo songs that make you want to get up on your feet…great tailgating songs. “Songs like ‘Whiskey Tears,’ ‘I Bought The Shoes,’ ‘Distant Shore’ and ‘Wish It Would Break,’ might make you want to sip on a beer and get lonesome for a little bit, but that’s what country music to me is all about…the good and the bad.” “I feel like I represent a side of Nashville that a lot people outside of the city don’t know about. All the guys and girls that play down on Lower Broadway in downtown and have such a depth of knowledge of country music and play those bars night after night, for four hour shifts. All the bluegrassers that get together for “pickin’ parties,” where everyone brings an instrument and their favorite beverage and often stay up 'til dawn picking and singing. That’s the Nashville I know and the Nashville I hope to bring attention to through my music.”“I hope you all enjoy it.” Send "Dierks Bentley" Ringtones to your Cell Dierks Bentley lyrics download txt Find more about Dierks Bentley

BAR REFAELI TALKS ESCADA FRAGRANCE, AFFINITY FOR GUYS IN BAGGY JEANS

Photo: GettyModel and Sports Illustrated cover girl Bar Refaeli has signed on as the new face of Escada's latest fragrance, Especially Escada -- a sparkling rose scent with hints of Ylang Ylang and Ambrette seeds. "When they [Escada] first told me about what the fragrance represented, they said things like, 'spontaneous, free-spirited, elegant, feminine, soft' and all these things that I feel like I'm very much about and love in life," says Refaeli. "And then I smelled it and it actually smelled like it." We caught up with the model after the Especially Escada launch to discuss the fragrance, the workout plan that whips her into swimsuit-season shape and why she's anti-skinny jeans on guys. What's the one product you always have in your bag?Hand lotion. There's an Israeli brand called Ahava. What about a go-to lipstick?Right now, I'm using a Clinique balm with a little tint. It moisturizes your lips with a little color. I don't like lipsticks, but I like tints. Is there any beauty advice your mom gave you growing up that you did follow and also some that you didn't follow? It's not advice, but my mom is very known for her blue liner, she loves to wear really bright, blue eyeliner. I think now, more people are trying it, but she's been doing that forever. I've started to put blue liner inside my eye; it's unnoticeable, but it really give a pop. I like it, it's fun.So I know that you love the new Especially Escada, but is there a scent or smell that you love?Laundry, for sure. I'm obsessed, ask all my friends. The first thing I do when I come home is wash everything so it smells like me. And I always try to find the newest, best detergents. Obsessed, it's awful.Who are your personal beauty icons from the past or today?Well first of all, my mom. Because my mom always has a big smile on her face and I think that really makes a woman beautiful. It doesn't matter what she has on her face, like makeup. I like Cameron Diaz, I like how she's always sweet with her makeup. She never goes crazy, just like pink-y tints, I love that. I like Jennifer Aniston, I like all those girls that are simple. Very laid-back, the girl-next-door, sweet, always with a smile on their face and just go soft. Can you tell me a little about how you get ready for swimsuit shoots? Does it take weeks or are you always exercising in preparation? It depends on the time during the year. I try to exercise a lot just because I love it, I really, really love it. So when I spend a lot of time in Israel, I like to do TRX. It's a new workout, it's unbelievable. But when I travel, I don't work out. It's too tiring and it's too hard. Before a shoot, well let's see, you know what? From traveling so much and being on planes, I try to keep healthy at all times so it's not always before a shoot. I try to keep my body adjusted and normal and feeling like you can take it, it has to be healthy. So I eat junk food, but when I'm craving it, not just because it's there. Are there any tips or tricks that you picked up on set during shoots? Any advice that you learned from other models?I don't think there are any secrets, but eating healthy and working out. I wish there were, I wish there were a magic pill but really, it's doing that. And moderation, it's all in moderation. Don't not eat dessert ever, have it, but then relax on it. Have it when you're craving it, but then eat healthy. What do you think is sexy on a woman, and what do you think is sexy on a man?Same answer for both: confidence. I feel like when a woman or a man carries themselves with elegance and confidence and are happy with who they are, that's very, very sexy to me.What's not sexy?Lack of confidence? (laughs)What about style-wise, what's unappealing on a man?I don't like men that try too hard, I like men that are basic. You know, like jeans and a t-shirt. And you can also make it cool, like V-neck over crew neck. I like very, very simple. I actually like baggy jeans on guys rather than the skinny ones. I like guys that are comfortable and manly.Last question. What's one thing that people don't know about you?I don't know, I'll have to get a list of what people do know about me. Maybe they don't know that I'm very very goofy. Like around my friends, I'm always doing something stupid, I'm the first one up for an adventure. I like to hang out with the guys more than the girls. I'm a guy's girl.
