Gil Elvgren was born on 15 March 1914 and died on 29 February 1980. The original name of Gillette Elvgren was an American painter known pin-up girls, graphic designer and advertising illustrator. Elvgren studied at the American Academy of Fine Arts and became a classical American illustrator who pioneered in his work a typical American ideal of feminine beauty.

In 1937, Gil began painting pin-up calendar for Louis F. Dow, one of America's leading publishing houses and in that time has created about 60 works.

Around 1944, Gil was approached by Brown & Bigelow, a company that still dominates the field of production schedules and advertising things. For the firm Brown & Bigelow Elvgren Gil worked since 1944 - the 1972nd Among his other major clients included such as Coca-Cola and General Electric.

Gil did not work only for large advertising agencies and companies, but also during the years 1940 to 1950 did the illustrations for a wide range of American magazines such as Saturday Evening Post and Good Housekeeping.

Elvgren has become recognized for his work and the artist became one of the greatest artists of pinup art of the twentieth century. Gil Elvgren lived in various places and was artistically active from 1930 until 1970.

His legacy is even today still alive and his works are very popular. It proves also that Elvgrenovy paintings are now very valuable and sought-after among collectors of art. Eg in June 2008 with his painting sold for record sum of 269,900 dollars (over 4.5 million CZK).
